White gunpowder, also known as smokeless gunpowder, is the type most commonly used in guns and other projectile weapons today. There are two types of modern smokeless gunpowder: single base and double base.
Single base gunpowder is made from nitrocellulose. Nitrocellulose burns by decomposing rapidly and forming hot gasses in the process. It generates more gas pressure as the combustion happens, leading to a higher velocity and less strain on the barrel of the gun. Double base gunpowder combines nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine. It can be a challenge to determine if single base or double base provides the best performing gunpowder, as there are so many other variances that occur when the gunpowder is assembled.
Modern white gunpowder has a much more complicated makeup than the original black gunpowder. All white gunpowder contains nitrocellulose as the energetic component, and double base gunpowder also includes nitroglycerine.
